The Gentlemen's section at Copthorne contains almost four hundred golfers and covers Full, Five Day and Intermediate Members. We run a full itinerary of internal competitions and matches against other clubs.

Qualifying Competitions

Either a medal or stableford competition is held monthly throughout the year except for the winter months from December to February. In addition, there are fourteen qualifying trophy competitions for individual play throughout the season.

Summer knockout competitions are run embracing competitions covering gross and handicap for all entrants as well as three competitions based on handicap groups.

During the winter months pairs compete for the Stungo Fourball competition. Those who lose their first match automatically qualify for the Hyde Beer Plate.

Other Competitions

As well as the medals, stablefords and knockouts there are a variety of other competitions included in the gentlemen's calendar, a selection of which are listed below;

Over the Easter Bank Holiday members compete in the Devil's Drivers foursomes knock-out. A competition where half the field are eliminated by the first lunchtime and it continues throughout the weekend until we have our finalists competing on the Sunday.

In October the gentlemen compete for the Nick's Niblick, a unique competition that really tests their nerve and stamina. The night before all entrants must attend the formal black-tie banquet where they are drawn out in pairs and then auctioned off.

We also regularly host the Sussex Captains in their competitions and hold a friendly match against the Sussex Boys; a team of the best young talent in Sussex take on our Scratch team.

Mid Sussex League

Copthorne is one of the founding Sussex clubs who play in the Mid Sussex League (MSL). Winter and summer leagues are run with each of the clubs playing home and away - on the same day - in teams of five pairs competing in fourball betterball. Each league session is finished with a Finals Day at one of the clubs. The winning team of the league collects the MSL Shield and the last-placed team takes home the Chimp! The Chimp derives from the initials of the original five competing clubs; Copthorne, Haywards Heath, Ifield, Mannings Heath & Pyecombe.
