Welcome from the Junior Organiser

At the start of 2009/2010 the Junior Section at Copthorne Golf Club has 43 Members including 5 girls and one of them, Charlotte Kemp was the Junior Captain last year. Junior Members at Copthorne are able to play their golf on one of the best courses in Sussex and it's reckoned that if you can play well at Copthorne and you can play well almost anywhere.

During the course of the year there is the opportunity to play in monthly medals and stablefords, as well as Trophy competitions such as the Centenary Trophy, Justin Hayward Memorial Trophy & the Siegle Salver. Other competitions include Winter & Summer Knock Outs, the Club Championship, club matches and County events such as the Summer league and the County Knock Outs.

For the really keen, there are various Golf Club "Opens" held throughout the county during school holidays, all these events plus regular friendly games should provide a wide range of golf for Juniors of all abilities to participate in (and no-one should miss our Junior BBQ in July).

For those with ever-improving handicaps at different age groups there may also be the chance to play at county level, lookout for the County age group championships on the county Website http://www.sussexgolf.org/ for the boys and http://www.sclga.com/ for the girls

Playing in some or all of these events will put any junior in a good position to win some trophies at the Junior AGM in November.

To find out more information about the Junior section contact us, or come along to the club and take a look at our notice board. You can always talk to our professionals who provide regular lessons and coaching for all Members of the golf club.

Hello everyone

As Junior Captain for 2010 I am looking forward to seeing the usual Juniors on the course and hopefully more. I hope that everyone can improve their game and reduce their handicaps by a significant percentage. Also I would like us to retain the Jack Langmead and challenge in the other major county events.
Good luck to everyone in the forth coming season.

Best Wishes

Nick

Junior's v Captain's Select
Saturday 16th May 2009

2009_05160001-400.jpg

Match 1

The Captain and the Professional got off to a good start against the Junior Captain Charlotte and the recently joined Stuart le Boutillier. The match only ever had one hole in it and on the 15th a superb birdie putt from Joe (he still has a silky short game) brought the game level. However a par at the last from Stuart was the clincher for victory.

Match 2

This turned on the 10th when Steve Crockford and Paul Eaton both put their second shots in to the ditch, Harvey and Ollie went one up and despite some hope on the 14th when Paul was on in two an outrageous putt from Ollie halved the hole. A win on the 15th hole for Steve and Paul had the pulse racing, but Harvey firmly closed the door on 17 and the boys won 3 and 2.

Match 3

James and Lewis thought this may not be their day when the Vice Captain lipped out for an eagle on the first. Four down after the 5th the boys battled hard and got back to 2 down at one point before the game finished on the 15th when Janie holed a 25 foot putt for Birdie.

 2009_05160005-400.jpg Match 4
The Junior organiser and the Managing Secretary won out in the country, Shannon and Cameron struggling to match the consistency of their opponents.
A solid start from Shannon with a par at the first to go one up, John struck back with a birdie at the second, a birdie from Shannon on the third, on it went, all a bit nip and tuck for the first eight holes
The two Juniors were obviously trying to see who could drive the ball the furthest off the Tee, Cameron's radar only seeming to kick in after the game had been lost. (Drive for show and putt for dough)

Match 5

Keith Burton and Paul Watts struggled form the start and by the fourth were three down, although he claimed to be struggling off the tee Jack Grimwood had little trouble finding the bottom of the cup with his putter on frequent occasions. Again this was won a long way from home and the Junior's were in an unbeatable position. Something that at one point was looking unlikely. The back 9 had proved too much for a number of the Captain's selections!

Match 6

So could Rob Grimwood and Andy Weddell get the select team back on level terms?. The match was close from the off some great putting from Thomas keeping the Junior's in the hunt. On the 18th tee it was all square and tension from those watching in the conservatory could be cut with a knife!. A couple of putts from Joe was enough to gain the half and victory for the Junior team.

On behalf of the Junior's thanks to Mike and his team for their excellent hospitality, roll on next year and hopefully another victory for the Junior's.

Juniors v's Scratch Squad
Monday 4th May 2009

For the third year running the Junior's and Scratch Squad went head to head on Bank Holiday Monday, a final warm up match for the scratch team, a real challenge for the Juniors and a 'dream' of what could have been for a couple of others!

 2009_Match_1-400Scratch.jpg

Match 1 saw Paul Oliver & Javier Liste take on Charlotte Kemp & Nick Chadd. A tight contest for 9 holes, the Juniors being one down at the turn before Javier went on a birdie blitz (Eight in total) closing out the game on the 15th.

Match 2 saw some familiar names 'Liste & Grimwood' tee up against 'Burton & Kemp' - which one was the Scratch team I hear you ask...
Age, experience and better ball hunting skills won the day, but some good golf from Jack & Everisto gave the scratch team manager an inkling that that next years challenge might be just a little harder!

 2009_Match3-400Scratch.jpg

Match 3 showed how seriously the Scratch squad were taking the challenge with a return to team duties by Mark Logan who was partnered by the 2008 club player of the year Neil Smith. Tough opposition for Harvey Weddell (Eagle on the 8th) & Oliver Watts, who having held off birdie after birdie from Mark finally won on the 18th

 2009_Match4-400Scratch.jpg

Match 4 had Harry Ruffles & Paul Mercer taking on James Ford (last years Junior Order of Merit winner) and Lewis Gurr (Fresh from a Gross 75 / Nett 59 in the Junior Centenary Trophy). Again the match went to the 18th with James & Lewis just getting their noses in front
Match score 2 all.....

 2009_Match5-400Scratch.jpg

The final match pitted Tom Eaton & Rob Grimwood against Ali Kyle & Cameron Hurrion, You can almost feel what it must be like to be a  Chelsea supporter, so close to a win and yet another match decided on the 18th .
Final score 3 - 2 to the Scratch Squad.

Many thanks to the Scratch Squad for giving up their Bank holiday morning - we wish you well at Lewes next Saturday.

Juniors v's Village Club
Sunday 19th April 2009

The first away match of the season saw the Juniors make the long trek round to the Village club who this year are Captained by the long hitting Stuart Hopkins.
With sunshine pouring down on a well presented golf course the Juniors enjoyed a hard fought match with a few nervous Junior's making their first outing as Members of the Junior team.
2009_04190336-400.jpg

Charlotte Kemp & Nick Chadd (initially playing like a man inspired) got off to a great start going three up after four holes, Stuart & Paul Arnold finally got their noses in front on the 15th but a par up the 18th by Charlotte saw the Junior Captain & Vice-Captain get a well earned half.

2009_04190340-400.jpg

Oscar Weddell far from being intimidated by the 'taller' members of the Village Club easily out drove everyone else in his fourball on the 1st. Well done to Freddie Innes who was making his debut for the Junior team.

2009_04190342-400.jpg James Ford & Evaristo Liste put in a strong performance against David Conner & Terry Standen before losing out on the 18th.

2009_04190344-400.jpg Cameron Hurrion & Oliver Watts had a tough draw against Keith Smith & David Izard finally going down 3 & 2.

2009_04190345-400.jpg

Standing on the 5th Tee, Daniel Kemp & Jack Grimwood were full of woe after a succession of good putts from Adrian Maxwell & John Edge saw them three down. However, they hung in and dug deep, steadily reducing the deficit until Daniel pulled off the shot of the afternoon on the 14th by sending his second shot into the hole for an unlikely eagle.

No way back from that - well done Jack & Daniel - bet you can't remember the 5th now!!

2009_04190346-400.jpg The final fourball was a fine example of experience and local knowledge against raw youth which resulted in Graham Standen & Brian Lovegrove missing out to Lewis Gurr & Alasdair Kyle.
The final match score being 3½ - 2½ to the Village Club.
A special word of thanks to the Ladies who did the catering, fantastic food enjoyed by everyone.
Many thanks to Stuart and his team for their hospitality, we look forward to seeing you all next year!
